HOW TO CLEAN YOUR SPINNING REEL
A Spinning Reel should be thoroughly cleaned and lubed at least once a year and more often if used heavily. Disassembling and reassembling a fishing reel can be intimidating to most Anglers. This article will cover how to maintain your reel between the annual Deep Cleaning with minimal disassembly.
As most Spinning Reels are similar in design, each model will possess its own uniqueness. It is good practice to review each Reel's Schematic for clarity. Most Fishing Reel Manufacturers include a Schematic along with the Reel. The Internet is also a great resource for locating one.
Ok, Grab your Spinning Reel and Let's get Started!
*Only Proceed with the following Reel Cleaning steps if you feel competent in your abilities.
1. If your reel has line on the spool place a small piece of Painters Tape over the tag end to secure it to the spool.

2. With a soft damp cloth (eg, baby wipe) wipe the exterior parts of your reel to remove any dirt and grime. Be sure to wring out any excess liquid from the cloth first.

3. Remove the Drag Tension Knob

4. Next, Remove the Spool

5. Clean the inside of the Spool with a cotton swab

6. Clean the inside of the Rotor with a cotton swab

7. Apply a thin coat of grease to the Shaft then turn the Handle several times to disperse the grease

8. Apply a drop of oil on the Shaft Threads then reinstall the Spool and Drag Tension Knob


9. Remove the Handle Screw on the non-handle side of the reel then remove the Handle

10. Apply a thin coat of grease to the Handle Shaft then reinstall the Handle

11. Apply a drop of oil on the Handle Screw Threads then reinstall

12. Apply a drop of oil to the knob on the Handle then spin the knob several times to disperse the oil

13. Apply a drop of oil on each end of the Bail then open and close the Bail several times

Wipe off any excess oil and grease from the reel
